Dipping Tobacco

Welcome fellow Dippers!

Ever wondered about how the tobacco we’ve been dippin’ for years was actually made? I know I have and now, after tireless searches thru pages upon pages of text and a lot of websites, we’ve finally brought you the world of dipping tobacco in one convenient place! Here, we’ll take you thru the hows and why’s of Dip, a bit about the history and even give you a place to buy some on the internet. So, without further ramblings from us, let’s start with a little history lesson!

Before we go to the methods, I get a lot of emails asking why you would want to put tobacco in your lip! The answer is pretty simple so, let me take a little time to answer it. Like I said in the beginning, Dip was invented back in the 1800’s out of necessity. Back then, almost all farming was done by hand. You have to remember, the industrial age of farming machines was still a ways off and plowing and seeding was done with animals pulling the plows and farmers placing each seed in the ground by hand. The way tobacco was used prior was either by sniffing (Nasal Snuff) or smoked using a pipe. Even though we see paintings of farmers working the fields with a pipe in their mouths, it was pretty hard to smoke a pipe and plant seeds.

Pipes back then were pretty expensive and the clay ones, which were relatively inexpensive, were prone to breaking and uncomfortable to hold in the teeth. George Weyman seemingly answered the call to make a type of tobacco that could be used while working the fields and invented American moist snuff! Now, farmers could enjoy their tobacco without worrying about broken pipes! Now that you all know why Dip was invented, let’s look at how it’s made.

If you’ve ever been to a gas station or convenient store in the south, behind the counter there are more displays of Dip than there are for smokes! The choices seem endless with a bunch of different brands and different types within each brand.

The last type is Pouch type.

Well, we’ve discussed the when’s, the why’s and how Dip is made but, we still need to discuss the how’s when it comes to using Dip.

Well fellow Dippers, we hope you enjoyed this little trip thru the wonderful world of American Dip (for info on the european equivalent, snus, please visit snus.com and found it fun and informative.
